Amy is incredibly excited to be sharing the second workshop performance of her song cycle, Any Place But Here, composed for voice and string quartet.
The cycle tells the story of a fictional male character leaving the American South during the Great Migration (1910 – 1970) and heading to an unnamed city. The songs tell of his hope as guiding force, his drive toward dignity, and his search for the elusive feeling of belonging in a hostile nation. All songs are composed using 20th century African-American poetry as lyric.
The cycle is set to premier at the Oakland Museum of California in February, 2016. Come listen, discuss, and be a part of this evolving work. Amy will be accompanied this evening by Amaranth Quartet.
